City Celebrates Mexican Independence and Return of Fiestas Parade

The City of Aurora, in partnership with the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board, is excited to announce the return of the popular Fiestas Patrias Parade, set to take place on Sunday, September 20, beginning at 11 A.M.

Longtime Aurora resident, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and local community icon, Señor Gil Rios, will serve as the Parade’s Grand Marshal. At 90 years young, Señor Rios’ commitment to Aurora’s Hispanic community has spanned generations. Rios worked in the fields picking crops as a youth, before proudly serving his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his service, Rios established a taco restaurant, and later went on to open the City’s first-ever Hispanic-owned corner pharmacy on the City’s East Side. Rios has also served as a member of the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board, and currently functions as an honorary board member.

Through his love for golf, Rios founded a program that introduces area youth to the sport while raising funds for scholarships through his annual golf outing. He has also supported young musicians in a local Marimba group, helping to provide lessons and instruments so that they can continue to pursue their musical dreams. Rios is a fixture at community events, volunteers with numerous organizations, boards, and committees, ushers at the Paramount Theatre, and still works at Ace Hardware on the City’s West Side. His story is one of hard work, service, generosity, and an enduring commitment to his community. 

The Parade will also feature numerous floats and groups to commemorate a community-wide celebration of Mexican Independence Day, Hispanic Heritage Month, and the City’s vibrant Hispanic culture.

Attendees can enjoy the comfort of free parking available throughout downtown Aurora. Visitors are encouraged to arrive before 10A.M. to provide enough time for parking and viewing preparation on the parade route.
