The City of Aurora was named one of America's safest cities to live in, according to a recent WalletHub analysis. By examining home and community safety, natural disaster risk, and financial safety, the report crowned Aurora as the 24th-safest city in the country. Aurora especially stood out for home and community safety and natural disaster risk, ranking 25th in both categories among the 182 cities analyzed.
“When people think about safety in a city, their minds probably immediately go to things like the crime rate, auto fatality rate, or risk of natural disasters,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in the report. “The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety.”
Aurora was the highest-ranked city in Illinois on the list, with the city of Chicago finishing in 163rd place. Juneau, Alaska, Warwick, Rhode Island, and Overland Park, Kansas, led the pack in the rankings, while Aurora was sandwiched between Nampa, Idaho, and Port Saint Lucie, Florida. “We are honored to be named one of the top 25 safest cities in America,” Mayor John Laesch said. “Through our community-oriented approach to public safety, along with the efforts of our hard-working police and fire departments, Aurora is truly a safe, vibrant, and diverse city where all are welcome.”
"This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the Aurora Police Department, the strong partnerships we’ve built with our residents and community organizations, and the support and resources we receive to keep our community safe," said Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas. "Together, those efforts allow us to address crime trends and respond to the needs of our community. Being recognized as one of the safest cities in America is something we take pride in." WalletHub’s analysis involved 182 cities across the country, including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state. Across the three key dimensions of home and community safety, natural disaster risk, and financial safety, WalletHub utilized 41 relevant metrics, with each metric being graded on a 100-point scale. From there, each city’s weighted average was determined across all metrics to calculate its overall score. Data used to create this ranking was collected from a number of organizations, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Fire Administration, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This distinction comes on the heels of Aurora being named the second-best city in America to move to, per MRI Software’s Move-In-Magnet Index, which credited the City’s job availability, cost of living, and overall safety as reasons behind the recognition.
