The City of Aurora’s Phillips Park Zoo is excited to announce the arrival of two baby wallabies, the first-ever marsupials to join the Zoo in its recorded history.
The two Bennett's wallabies, also known as red-necked wallabies, are named Wally and Bindi and were retrieved from Santa's Reindeer Ranch, a U.S. Department of Agriculture licensed facility, on August 5. Both of the animals are mates and are just over one year old. They are currently residing in the exhibit space between Tito the Lynx and the Zoo's barnyard. As Wally and Bindi get accustomed to their new home, they will have the choice to be on exhibit or off exhibit in their dedicated indoor space. As they continue to settle in, they will be increasingly more visible to the public.
Bennett's wallabies are natively found in the forest and coastal shrublands of Australia and Tasmania. As adults, they weigh between 25 and 60 pounds and are herbivorous, eating grasses, herbs, and roots in their native range. They can also jump up to five feet horizontally.
