CITY OF AURORA SET TO PAUSE AND RECALIBRATE SPECIAL CENSUS RECOUNT

The City of Aurora is pausing and recalibrating its Special Census recount effort, following approval from the Federal Census Bureau.

The Aurora Special Census recount, which was set to begin, initially, on February 3, 2025, was postponed due to the Federal hiring freeze enacted by the new Presidential Administration. City officials were contacted by the Census Bureau in mid-May to determine a new date for the campaign. After extensive meetings and discussions with the Census Bureau and the City Council, both parties have mutually agreed to pause the Special Census recount at this time, while working to revamp the initiative at a future date. The Census Bureau will alert the City when new dates become available, and will hold the funds paid by the City until it resumes. At any point in time, the City is entitled to a refund of all unused funds if the City decides to terminate its agreement with the Federal Census Bureau.

In addition to re-entering the queue to pursue a full recount, the City of Aurora intends to file an amended map with the Census Bureau that is primarily focused on newly constructed residential units throughout the City.

The Special Census campaign was launched following the 2020 Decennial Census, in which it was reported that the City of Aurora lost approximately 17,000 residents. This finding resulted in the City losing over $4.3 million per year in tax revenue. The loss of funding cannot be recovered, or retroactively provided to the City following the results of the Special Census.

The City of Aurora remains committed to making sure that every resident is accurately counted and represented.
