AFD To Host Ribbon Cutting For Two New Fire Stations
Published on March 16, 2026
Aurora, Ill. – The City of Aurora and the Aurora Fire Department will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 19, to celebrate the grand opening of the City’s two newest fire stations.
The ceremony, which will take place from 9 A.M. to 12 P.M., includes stops at both Station 9, located at 500 N. Eola Road, and Station 13, located at 1701 Bilter Road. Both stations are set to open less than two years after breaking ground, strengthening the Fire Department’s response time to regular fire incidents and emergency medical incidents throughout the City.
Station 13 will mark Aurora's first-ever fire station north of Interstate 88 and is expected to cut response time to the City’s Northeast Side in half. The Station will feature new, cutting-edge technology and an updated layout set to make operations safer and more efficient. The building will have specialized ventilation systems for both firefighters’ gear and vehicle exhaust, plus gear washers and dryers to minimize carcinogens that may attach to gear during a fire.
The new Station 9, which is moving from 2339 Diehl Road to 500 N. Eola Road, will feature more storage for front-line units and improved access to key areas within the building. It will also further strengthen the City’s emergency response capabilities on the Northeast Side, while ensuring that firefighters have the space, equipment, and resources necessary to serve at the highest level.
“Opening Station 13 and relocating Station 9 reinforces the City’s commitment to keeping its residents safe through enhanced response times,” Interim Fire Chief Kevin Nickel said. “This historic occasion is the result of years of planning, hard work, and support. We are very excited to showcase both stations, and will continue to provide excellent emergency services to the community.”
Members of the public and media are invited to attend the ceremony, as tours of both stations will take place immediately following the ribbon cuttings.
