At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, Mayor John Laesch honored Marmion Academy’s Boys Swimming and Wrestling Teams, who captured multiple Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state championships in late February.

Marmion’s Boys Swimming Team led the charge, with athlete Brayden Capen winning both the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle state titles. Capen, along with teammates Dan Ginaitis, Patrick O’Connor, and Braden Nagel, also won the 200-yard medley relay championship, turning in a time of just 1:29.26.

On the wrestling circuit, the Cadets captured their second straight state title, posting a 36-22 final score during the championship weekend in Bloomington. Wrestlers Nicholas Garcia (132 pounds), Demetri Carrera (138 pounds), and Zach Stewart (150 pounds) also earned individual state championships in their respective weight classes.

“Both Marmion’s swimming and wrestling teams put up excellent performances,” Mayor John Laesch said. “Each athlete’s exceptional talent and hard work have truly made Aurora proud.”

Athletes received personalized Mayor’s Awards of Excellence, along with commemorative street signs, designed by the City’s Street Maintenance Division, to honor their success at the state level.
