CITY OF AURORA CONTINUES POST-STORM CLEAN UP EFFORTS

The strong thunderstorms that hit Aurora’s West Side served as the largest weather event the City has faced since the 1996 flood. Although roadways have been cleared and power has been restored, the City’s Street Maintenance Division is still working to remove damaged trees from parkways and from some private property when it impacts the sidewalk or driveway. The City continues to receive new 311 service calls and, as of today, 197 of 411 requests for service have been completed.

The City of Aurora is continuing the clean up efforts from the severe storms. We are aware that some conflicting information about debris pickup has circulated on social media. During events like this, residents are encouraged to rely only on the City’s official website and social media accounts for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

The number of service calls continues to grow, so we are asking residents who have the ability to bundle smaller storm debris along their curbs, so Groot, the City's waste management partner, can take it away. We understand that some residents will not be able to do perform this work due to the size of trees and debris, or lack of equipment.

Groot will continue to lead residential clean up by collecting tree branches and limbs for the next two weeks.

Please follow these guidelines for Groot tree debris collection:

  • Branches and limbs between ½ inch and 4 inches in diameter, and 2 to 4 feet in length, must be bundled

  • Each bundle must weigh less than 50 pounds

  • Bundled branches and limbs can be placed at the curb without a waste sticker

  • Brush smaller than ½ inch in diameter is considered yard waste and must be placed in a kraft paper yard waste bag with a waste sticker attached

For those who have larger trees or need greater assistance, the City’s Street Maintenance Division will conduct a one-time pickup of all tree debris placed on parkways (the grass strips between the street curb and sidewalk) throughout Wards 4, 5, and 6. Residents are asked to place all debris on the curb by Wednesday, August 20, 2025, and stack it neatly to help ensure smooth and timely collection.

In some cases, debris may be left behind due to size or volume. If this occurs, crews will record the affected address and return with the necessary equipment as soon as possible. Due to the amount of service requests submitted, clean up may take up to 4-6 weeks to complete.

I would like to thank all residents for your patience following Saturday’s severe thunderstorms. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of Ward 4 Alderman Jonathan Núñez, Ward 5 Alderman Carl Franco, and Ward 6 Alderman Mike Saville for being fully engaged in getting streets opened up and communicating with the public. We are all working together to navigate this situation, and our team is continuing to work around the clock to execute a safe and timely clean up.

Respectfully,
Mayor John Laesch
