Produced in collaboration with the Ride Illinois, this map(PDF, 1MB) identifies off-road trails and suggests on-road routes for bicycle travel throughout Aurora. Roads rated using three relative levels of cyclist comfort. Safety tips included.

Mobile-friendly mapping software shows bike trails, parking, restrooms and rest areas, and bike shops, plus the locations of popular destinations like farmers markets and a way to report trail issues.

Developed by the Kane Kendall Council of Mayors, this mobile-friendly mapping software shows all local and regional trails within Kane and Kendall Counties plus regional trails throughout the seven-county Chicagoland region. Roadways are rated by Bicycle Level of Service to show comfort, safety, and ease of mobility. Regional points of interest (“Amenities”) maps include museums, theme parks, landmarks, and farmers markets. Other maps include parking and restrooms, public parks/arenas/water parks/nature centers (“Recreation”), public transit, hospitals/police and fire stations/libraries (“Services”), and a means of reporting trail issues.

Identifies on-road routes and off-road trails for cycling to the Downtown Aurora and Route 59 Metra stations. Roads rated using three relative levels of cyclist comfort. 

Bikes are permitted during limited hours on weekday trains and on all weekend trains. See the Metra website for times and the Ventra mobile app and printed schedules for which trains allow bikes. Standard sized bikes can be accommodated in the ADA-accessible area of railcars. Up to five bikes are allowed per accessible diesel rail car and two bikes per accessible Metra Electric car. An ADA symbol on the outside of the railcars indicates accessibility.

Test the bike safety knowledge of a child bicyclist (older elementary ages), adult bicyclist (teens and adults), motorist, driver’s education students, or truck/bus/other large vehicle driver. Questions are multiple choice and include images; right and wrong answers generate illustrated explanations emphasizing the safest choice.

The Active Transportation Alliance publishes a guide for biking to work that includes tips on preparing to ride, how to look good and stay comfortable, how to stay safe without fear of injury, avoiding getting doored, quick maintenance checks, and choosing a route. Riding to work can be pleasurable - give it a try!

The Institute of Transportation Engineers provides technical resources on the Complete Streets concept that include toolkits, design and implementation guidelines, benchmark reports, fact sheets, and primers on elements of active transportation, context sensitive solutions, freight, traffic calming, and transit.

As one of 11 sub-regional councils of the Council of Mayors established to provide a forum for early public involvement and partnership on the various transportation plans and projects developed for Northeastern Illinois, the Kane Kendall County Council of Mayors participates in programming federal Surface Transportation Program (STP) funds for transportation improvements each year and is a key player in the development of the region's Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and Regional Transportation Plan.
